Maternity Care for BC (MC4BC): Program Changes

Maternity Care for BC (MC4BC) is a self-directed learning and development program designed for family physicians who want to provide pregnancy and newborn care in their practices. By the end of the program, participants will feel prepared to confidently provide pregnancy and newborn care independently.

To improve the program’s flexibility and remove barriers to participation, the following changes have been applied to the program:

• Removal of the return of service agreement requiring participants to provide maternity care in BC for two years after their MC4BC training.

• Increased flexibility in how participants can use their training hours to support their learning goals. For example, participants may now complete more than 20 deliveries during their training.

• Building a participant-preceptor matching process for participants who would like support identifying a preceptor and training site.

• Enable physicians to participate in MC4BC training for clinic-based antepartum and/or postpartum care without participating in training for facility-based labour and delivery care.

• The FPSC provides MC4BC participants with a stipend while they complete their training and offers a travel stipend for participants travelling outside of their home community to complete their training.
